Clifford Montgomery worked as a laborer for years before starting his own company, Montgomery Excavating and Grading in San Diego, CA in 1985. He worked primarily as a sub-contractor specializing in excavation, grading, and underground utilities. Then, in 2008 as the recession hit, Clifford incorporated his existing business into Montgomery Construction Services, brought his wife in as partner, and became licensed as a general contractor.
MCSI started in 2008 as a general contracting firm that specialized in residential building. They’ve since diversified their area of focus to include commercial and institutional work owned by public entities located in California, such as municipalities and both the state and federal government agencies.
All of that growth means they need to hire more people to support it. They came to Pacific Community Ventures for a small business loan to keep the job growth going. Montgomery Construction Services plans to use their new capital to expand by hiring both a construction estimator as well as bookkeeper.
As a result, MCSI is growing. MCSI has expertise in roadway, channel, subdivisions, park construction, grading, as well as both structural and site concrete and masonry. In addition to a C-12 paving and grading license, the company also obtained both an A and B license for general commercial contracting, broadening its scope and branching into commercial and residential building and remodeling.
