Transforming Communities with City Design Studio
“PCV’s combined financial assistance and mentorship support was a game-changer, and enabled me to prepare for a business line of credit from a commercial bank.”
Established in 2010, City Design Studio has carved a unique niche by providing architecture, urban design, and planning services focused on transforming underinvested communities. Celebrating its 14th year, the firm has grown from humble beginnings to become a key player in urban development projects across the globe. Founded by seasoned professional Farooq Ameen, who has extensive experience in large practices, including a significant tenure at AECOM, City Design Studio was founded with a clear vision and robust support from established clients. The company’s inaugural project in Denver set the stage for securing a pivotal opportunity with Los Angeles Metro, marking the beginning of an enduring legacy in transit-oriented development. The project in South Los Angeles spurred City Design Studio’s growth, leading to nearly 40 similar projects in Southern California, the East Coast, China, and briefly in the Middle East. One of their most notable projects included contributing to the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California—a cutting-edge, net-zero energy facility and the home for the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team. Here, City Design Studio designed the surrounding structures, ensuring an enriched experience for fans at the stadium, beyond the main arena.
Farooq Ameen’s journey to finding Pacific Community Ventures (PCV) began during his participation in the 10,000 Small Businesses program, sponsored by Goldman Sachs. After graduating from the program, Ameen was introduced to various opportunities, including the Inner City 100, a prestigious recognition for businesses thriving in inner-city areas. Achieving a spot on the Inner City 100 for two consecutive years, Ameen’s company gained significant visibility, which led to an outreach from PCV. Ameen’s experience with traditional lending was limited, but he had secured an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, from the Small Business Administration (SBA). The EIDL offered favorable rates without the rigorous application process typically associated with commercial loans. However, it was the loan from PCV in 2022 that proved critical for sustaining Ameen’s company.
The funding was used for operational expenses, bridging the anticipated 60-90 day gap for accounts payables as they executed upcoming contracts. The loan primarily covered salaries and wages for both existing employees and new hires necessary to complete the expanded scope of work1. PCV’s commitment to supporting small businesses and creating equitable jobs played a pivotal role in Ameen’s success.
Farooq Ameen’s experience with Pacific Community Ventures extended beyond financial support; it also included Business Advising services. Ameen worked closely with Mark F., a Microsoft professional, for several months to refine City Design Studio’s brand identity and publicize it effectively. Through numerous conversations, they honed in on the firm’s core values and authentic positioning in the market, culminating in the powerful brand statement, “transforming communities.” This advisory relationship not only solidified the company’s branding and publicity, but also ensured that City Design Studio’s commitment to community transformation was genuinely perceived and recognized in the marketplace.
Farooq stated, “PCV’s combined financial assistance and mentorship support was a game-changer, and enabled me to prepare for a business line of credit from a commercial bank.” Now with many great projects in the works, City Design is at the forefront of sustainable urban development, exemplified by their work on one of the most ambitious net zero buildings in California, the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, CA.
City Design Studio is committed to advancing net zero building practices by integrating energy-efficient building designs that comply with California’s Title 24, a set of energy efficiency standards designed to reduce energy consumption in buildings, improve sustainability, and enhance environmental performance . Their focus on energy conservation and passive design ensures minimal energy use for heating and cooling through natural shading and insulation, while prioritizing water conservation with local, low-irrigation plants. In transit-oriented projects, they prioritize biking and walking designs, creating inviting pedestrian pathways with engaging storefronts and amenities to encourage car-free mobility. Additionally, Farooq Ameen’s involvement with the US Council on Open Building underscores their commitment to adaptable architecture, designing buildings that can be repurposed over time. As they continue to transform urban communities, City Design Studio aims to expand their project reach and lead the way in sustainable urban innovation.
